Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located in the area of Huacaojian north of Zhoujiayuan, Dongxian County, Jiangxi Province. It was named by the Regional Survey Party of Jiangxi Province in 1978, and was first cited publicly by the former Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources of Jiangxi Province in 1984.

Lithology and Thickness

Lower member represents grey-violet pebble-bearing tuffaceous sediments. Upper member consists of dark-grey to grey-white intermediate-acidity ignimbrite and breccia-bearing ignimbrite. Its lower member is with a thickness of about 16 m, and its upper member is with a thickness of about 456 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is in an eruptive contact with the underlying Zhoujiayuan Fm

Upper contact

Regionally, the schematic strat column indicates the next younger unit as Daguding Fm

Regional extent

It is distributed essentially in the Xianshan Mts of Chongren area and at Fuzhou in the southern part of Dongxian County, as well as in between the Dongxian and Jinxi Counties.

No fossils having been found so far.


Age 

The isotope age gained with neutron activation technique by K-Ar (40Ar/39Ar) on the biotite from the mortar lava of the Xiangshan Mts in the Lo’an area is of 141.16±1.5 Ma—146.8±4.9 Ma (Li Kunying, 1989). Schematic strat column in previous "red Chinese Lexicon" had implied that the Huacaojian Fm spanned the late-Late Jurassic.
